The Association of residential letting agents (ARLA)
Whilst the letting of residential property is highly legislated, agents that deal with letting and property management are not regulated. This means that anyone can set up as a letting agent with NO requirements regarding the overall conduct, experience or capability of the agent and NO requirments for them to show that they protect their client’s money.
ARLA are aimed at providing some peace of mind, as members of the scheme have to be able to show that they have a form of client money protection in place.
However being a trustworthy letting agent is about more that just protecting their client’s money, ARLA have a strict code of conduct by which member agents must abide.
Therefore it is vital that landlords protect themselves agains fraudulent or inexperienced agents by instructing an agent who is a member of ARLA. This is the only way they can ensure that both their money and their assets are being looked after by an agent who is held to a higher standard within the industry.
